Independence. Today let's talk about it and about how we can help our children become independent. Many people say today that society has grown more infantile: young people are not ready to make decisions, not ready to answer for their actions, not ready to start families...
How should you think about the world in order to become miserable without any outside help? There is a list of beliefs for that, and each of them breeds a mental disorder of its own. These are irrational beliefs phrased as "musts". If you hear the word MUST in yourself or in others, combined with EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE or ALWAYS, there is something to think about.
An inner world filled with ideas and symbols. There are many feelings and experiences (they come flooding in), yet most of them are never let out as emotions. Experiences are turned into elaborate structures of ideas and symbols, and only then are they shown to the world. An all-embracing, all-consuming wish (one that takes over the mind) to realise their own ideas-desires (overvalued ideas). These ideas often diverge from the real needs of the organism, of the body. In an interview with the Italian magazine "Chi", Elisabetta Canalis describes her relationship with her former boyfriend George Clooney as "a father-and-daughter relationship". Marriage and children were therefore never discussed. Whether the relationship between the 30-year-old model and the 20-year-old actor broke down because of the age gap is still an open question. Yet the problems Canalis reports are far from untypical for the pairing of young women and older men.
