No matter how much I have talked about it, and no matter how often other specialists have warned about the harmful side effects of these drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories), the effect has been close to nil. People have used them and go on using them without any supervision, taking no account of the situation, for practically any ache or inflammation.
"Every cloud has a silver lining"
Folk wisdom
The patient information leaflet for Diclofenac and similar drugs says in black and white: ‘Available on prescription only’, which means that these medicines are meant to be taken under a specialist's supervision.. .
Besides the well-known facts about their harmful effect on the stomach lining and the liver, there is another factor that even neurologists very rarely take into account when treating conditions of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
Every drug in this group retains calcium in the tissues! Why is that dangerous?
They relieve the inflammation but make matters worse. The disease and the disturbances in the spinal motion segments go on developing and getting worse. They move into another phase.
Muscles and discs are meant to be elastic and mobile, but with the calcification of the tissues that function is lost and the result is a rupture of the pulpous ring in a herniated intervertebral disc. Blood supply to the tissues is reduced, which means swelling forms faster and the pain becomes unbearable.
Sadly, people repeat this vicious circle, only now with a higher dose, and they all but become ‘customers for life’ of clinics, pharmacies and everyone whose interest is not in people's health but in having customers.
The second danger is taking NSAIDs together with calcium supplements, which makes the situation worse still. In my practice I have repeatedly come across Voltaren and diclofenac being prescribed and taken alongside them.
In the current situation, NSAIDs of this group contribute to fibrosis of lung tissue, which worsens the course of the illness and increases the risk of a fatal outcome in those infected. So if symptoms of a viral infection or a respiratory illness appear, avoid taking ibuprofen, Voltaren, diclofenac and the like. As an alternative you can use paracetamol and its equivalents.
There are, of course, particular cases where these medicines are necessary — rheumatoid arthritis, for example — but always taking the individual situation into account and under the supervision of specialists.
Conclusions:
Do not take medicines without consulting a specialist or your doctor.
Work on preventing illness and strengthening your immunity. IN ADVANCE
Wash your hands more often. Touch your face less. Keep your distance. And do not leave your home unless you have to.
Use the current situation (quarantine, self-isolation) for the good of your health, not to its detriment.
Take care and stay healthy!
