Some herbs contain phytochemicals that will help you relieve the symptoms that come with anxiety and worry. Herbal supplements are usually taken as tinctures, extracts, decoctions or capsules.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has a sleep-inducing and calming effect. It works best in combination with mint and lemon balm and in herbal blends — valerian rhizomes, hop cones, motherwort herb and mint leaves in equal parts, for example.
Lavender (Lavandula officinalis) has been used as a calming remedy since ancient times. It has a mild sedative effect on the central nervous system and helps with anxiety and depression.
A close relative of lavender, lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) also has proven sedative properties.
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile). It is widely used as a natural remedy for the symptoms of worry and anxiety. According to recent research, chamomile and lavender are more effective at reducing stress and relieving anxiety when they are used together.
A herb traditionally used for depressive states — St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is also used to bring the level of worry down. At the moment it is thought to be better suited to treating anxiety that is linked specifically to depression. It is more effective when used in combination with other herbs, passionflower for instance.
Rhodiola rosea (Rhodiola rosea) is a plant that grows in alpine regions. For many years it has been used as a tonic and as a calming remedy for the nervous system.
