Back Pain and Stress. How to Avoid a Flare-Up and Cope With It

The link between stress and pain in the joints and the spine is obvious. One reason is the drop in the body's defences — the immune system — caused by stress. Inflammatory conditions flare up with new force, bringing on fresh bouts of back pain.

Any change in life — money troubles, family problems, a house move or even a holiday — disrupts our usual routine and forces us to adapt to a new situation, which brings worry and, in the end, stress.

In this situation it is important to understand that the appearance of stress symptoms is telling you that it is time to calm down and relax.

Here are a few tips that will help you switch off and unwind:

• Do a breathing exercise. For example, take 10–15 calm, deep breaths in and out. Breathe in slowly through your nose, pause briefly and breathe out gently through your mouth, making the out-breath twice as long as the in-breath.

* Smile and laugh more, and spend more time with positive people — this will help you rediscover your love of life and let go of stress.

* Listen to some calm music, read a book.

• Do something you enjoy. Cook, draw, or simply do whatever helps you stop dwelling on the thoughts that are troubling you right now.

* Go out for a walk, spend time in nature, enjoy the sun and the fresh air.

If you do feel that your back pain has flared up, or that stress and worry are starting to affect your quality of life, see a specialist and use additional ways to reduce stress and pain and return to a calmer, more comfortable state.
