Careers for Self-Actualization for compulsives

The compulsive personality type comes into its own wherever diligence and respect for tradition are required. They fill any post that involves following clear rules, instructions and traditions, along with precision, neatness and doing things properly. The bulk of the military is a compulsive affair: little thinking needed, give them the instructions and they will carry every one of them out. And the same goes for ministers of religion, where a systematic kind of devotion is called for.

They can make decent programmers. There are a great many introverts among programmers: autistic, compulsive and paranoid types alike. The autistic personality type can build a very complex program. The paranoid can create a highly inventive product, but almost never finishes it, and nobody except him can make sense of the code. The compulsive programmer, on the other hand, will write something very clear, precise and easy to hand on, strictly by the rules, and will finish every last button, without a single stroke to spare. Everything will be tidied up and fitted into very clean, correct structures.

Among compulsives there are many traditional scientists — not innovators, but researchers working inside an existing paradigm.

Compulsives make excellent teachers and carers in primary school — but only up to the age when children start their teenage rebellion. A teacher of the first three years, for instance. Compulsive personalities cannot cope with rebellious teenagers: their indignation is too great when these “whippersnappers” reject society.

Compulsives can be economists and analysts, but only within a system. A chief accountant, for example — but... The moment you walk into the accounts department itself, you find yourself in epileptoid country. It is a state of its own, a completely different world, and in any firm it is an entirely separate structure living a life of its own. Accountants are epileptoids by and large: there you have to bring in the cake and talk about relationships — how are the children, who has fallen ill. And all of it gets counted and done at the same time.
