What do Paranoid types adore? Know that, and you will be able to rule the “éminences grises”! A creative little task, isn’t it?
Since Paranoid types shy away from a “dangerous world”, their inner need is for self-sufficiency and independence. Their lines:
“My home is my castle!” “I must certainly not depend on anyone!”
There has to be a safety cushion: life has cracked, and the last suitcase is still stashed away in the seats. There must always be a way out.
Hence the theme of loving solitude — which in fact is not about being lonely, but about being self-sufficient:
“I am company enough for myself! The cleverest person to talk to is me.”
Of course the need for company, for interaction, for other people is still there; but when the wish to be with people collides with the need for self-sufficiency, self-sufficiency usually wins — as a neurotic need.
The deeper Paranoid types sink into self-sufficiency, the more they turn into outsiders and hermits: they withdraw from people, close up, seal themselves into their tower. The need for Independence adds fuel to the fire: “don’t influence me” leads to a loss of closeness and to loneliness.
The basic need of the Paranoid type is the need for exclusivity. It is what pushes them to step out into the world and do something in it. Exclusivity takes other people: sitting in their tower, a Paranoid type does not even know they are exclusive. But if I have gone out to people and shown that I am exclusive, that is a great inner gift.
Exclusivity can also be realised through material objects, through owning them. Full exclusivity — not mere uniqueness — is knowing something nobody else knows, being able to do something nobody else can do. Men realise their exclusivity through achievements or through standing: I have to become and to be one of a kind. A woman takes exclusivity in a broader sense. At the very least it shows in her accessories and her clothes.
For all their anxiety, Paranoid types were among the first to shorten their skirts. The absolutely paranoid outfit is a light dress with heavy boots — matching the unmatchable. Elegance as a style is another form of exclusivity: the little black dress, Coco Chanel.
The Paranoid type is also superb at juggling facts. They can line facts up into any logical chain and prove absolutely anything. And that is exactly what can tangle them up. So a Paranoid type will gratefully accept a few immovable facts, a few reference points that cannot be read any other way. Sherlock Holmes is a typical paranoid.
And they also adore:
- Digging down to the truth, working out how something is secretly put together.
- Running things from the background (“I steer, but nobody sees me” — the éminences grises).
- Hard problems and solving them (putting together every kind of puzzle and brain-teaser).
- A change of scene, travelling (it clears the head and brings you back to yourself).
- Talking to all sorts of people (as the study of “new structures”), interesting conversations.
- Books, films, theatre, ideas (complex, out of the ordinary).
- Perpetual, at times illogical, opposition to everything — above all to the government of the day and to popular ideas (which creates the illusion of inner freedom).
